Ranging across Africa's golden savannahs, the giraffe is considered the world's largest land animal, stretching upwards of 18 feet from hoof to horn. Yet despite its majestic stature, it has joined countless other animals on the global list of endangered species. Due to poaching and conflict in the 1990s, the numbers of some giraffe species such as the reticulated giraffe in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia have plummeted to less than 3,000 individuals. "In this portrait the goal was to capture the elegance of one of the animal kingdom's most unique species in a simple form and movement," Wyland says.
