Although there are only eight species of bear in the world, they are widespread, appearing throughout the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. Bears have been hunted since prehistoric times for their meat and fur, despite their position as apex predators in the animal kingdom. In modern times, bears faces constant pressure through loss of habitats and illegal trade of bears and bear parts. Currently, the IUCN lists six bear species as vulnerable or endangered, while some such as the brown bear have virtually disappeared in many areas where they once flourished. "The bear has been an inspiration since my early days of hiking the woods with my dad," Wyland says. "I simply wanted to create a sculpture here that would capture the raw power and the aesthetic beauty of this forest inhabitant."
