Sharks have roamed our seas since before the time of dinosaurs, but their long reign at the top of the ocean food chain may be ending. Roughly 73 million sharks are killed by fishing industries every year. As they become increasingly vulnerable to human impacts, Wyland has been a powerful advocate for their protection. His new contemporary bronze sculpture is the latest in a series of works devoted to his continuing admiration of this majestic creatures. The shark has always interested me because of its amazing lines, Wyland says. "This sculpture focuses on the intensity of a top ocean predator that, with luck and changes in human behaviors, can rebound one day to its former glory."
