Tigers are large, solitary predators that depend on large, contiguous habitats to support their need for prey. Native to eastern and southern Asia, these animals are recognizable for the pattern of dark vertical stripes that overlays their reddish-orange fur. In recent times, tigers have come into conflict with heavily populated human settlements, which has led to a severe decline in their numbers. Although they are highly adaptable, they continue to fight for survival. Of the three subspecies of modern tiger, three are extinct and the remaining six are classified as endangered, some critically so. "Tiger's have an impressive bulk and power," Wyland says. "For a wildlife artist, it's hard to find a better subject. This sculpture is a testament to the tiger's grace, power, and stunning beauty."
