The octopus is a marine invertebrate with a large head and eight arms that is found in oceans around the world. They are abundant in the Mediterranean Sea, the ocean near Japan, and in eastern parts of the Atlantic Ocean. The octopus can hide from predators by blending into its surroundings through changes in both the color and the texture of the skin. Highly intelligent, these curious animals can be readily trained to distinguish between different shapes and patterns. Some octopuses, such as the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, are not on endangered species lists, but are at critically low levels for breeding requirements. "The octopus is an intelligent animal that really lends itself to sculpture," Wyland says. "The three-dimensional medium is a great way to showcase its dynamic sea forms and graceful movements."
