Seldom does a more perfect sculpture come along than this powerful depiction of a hammerhead shark gliding silently over a coral reef. In a rare departure from his marine mammal work, Wyland turns his sculptor’s eye to this consummate predator, notable for its mass summer migrations, powerful body and uniquely shaped head. “As an artist, I have great admiration for the hammerhead shark,” Wyland says. “They are a perfect example of adaptation, with their wide set eyes that give them better visual range than most other sharks. To me they have always seemed mysterious, fierce, and beautiful at the same time. And with qualities like that, how could any artist resist?”
