Renowned for its luxurious coat and playful disposition, sea otters have captured the imagination of people everywhere. These clowns of the sea once thrived in abundance along the coasts of the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean. But their discovery in the early 19th century by fur traders eventually reduced sea otter populations in most of their range to fewer than 2,000 individuals. In this depiction, Wyland demonstrates through his extraordinary sculpture work the gentle spirit and beauty of these animals. I've had the pleasure to spend considerable time at sea observing the behaviors and habits of sea otters, "Wyland says. "It's allowed me to capture their playfulness here and share the joy they bring to the world. This is one of those sculptures that reminds you of how fascinating nature is."
