Considered one of the most intelligent animals of the sea, the octopus has been the subject of man's curiosity for years. Wyland puts his focus on an east Pacific red octopus commonly found along much of the coast of North America. "Like all octopuses, these animals are undersea chameleons," Wyland says. "They can change color and texture and become almost invisible to predators. Artists who paint them have to make a conscious decision of what state the animal should be painted in. Should it be a deep red or brown or while or some mixture of these colors? In this case, I wanted to show the animal in its natural environment as it moves along a rocky reef. Looking at this image now, I have to say there is so much about these animals that make them one of my favorites.
