Humpback whales spend half the year engaged in one of the world’s longest migrations — an epic journey spanning nearly 8,000 miles. In Wyland’s “Under the Sea,” a mother spends a serene moment in the calm tropical waters off Hawaii, preparing her calf for the long journey that lies ahead. “It seems fitting that a newborn humpback calf’s introduction to the world is in a place as safe and beautiful as Hawaii,” says Wyland. “Once they get out in the wild, the open sea is a much different world, and it will require all the energy the mother and baby have to survive the journey.”
