Polar bears are one of the earth's most iconic animals. These powerful predators roam the artic ice sheets and swim in that region's coastal water and have been sighted hundreds of miles from land. The bear's stark white coat and powerful stature make them a favorite subject for nature artists. As Wyland notes, "I am fascinated by all creatures that make their homes in, on, or around the ocean. Polar bears are attractive and appealing, but they are extremely skilled hunters in one of the coldest, most stark environments on the planet." Because of ongoing and potential loss of their sea ice habitat from climate change, the numbers of polar bears worldwide has declined to 20,000. They were listed as a threatened species in 2008. Like many threatened species, the survival of polar bear's habitat remains an urgent issue for Wyland.
