Over the years, I've been fortunate to spend a considerable amount of time with manatees in the wild. One of my favorite places to see these gentle creatures is the spring-fed river near Homossasa Springs, Fla. The area is a sanctuary for the West Indian Manatee, which is now considered among the most endangered animals on earth. Current estimates are that only 2,800 of these animals exist today, and face an even more uncertain future due to collisions with watercraft, poaching, disease, and damage to their natural habitats. This painting is my way of paying tribute to these wonderful animals.
