GLACIER WATERS

Image Size: 30" x 22.5" ()

Despite the presence of glaciers, the chilly waters of Southeast Alaska, prince William Sound and the Barren Islands of Alaska play host to humpback whales every spring, who feast on the abundant food sources. In this mixed media image by Wyland, the artist uses his artistic imagination and photography to depict the first moments of a humpback’s deep dive in search of food. “At one time before whaling, there were about 15,000 humpbacks in this area of Alaska,” Wyland says. “They’ve made a comeback, but scenes like this are still rare.”
