Twenty years ago, Wyland created one of the most iconic images of his career. In the midst of a whirlwind mural painting tour of cities across the east coast, the artist took time out to return to his fine art work. " I had the good fortune of painting a smaller mural at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., which allowed me the time to paint an oil painting," Wyland says. "I’d been thinking about this image of a mother humpback pushing her calf to the surface for its first breath for a number of years and had already done a bronze sculptures based on it. When an image comes to me, I become obsessed to paint it, and this one actually painted itself. I painted it at the National Zoo’s auditorium in front of several hundred people. When it was completed, I knew I had a winner."

Since its creation, the classic image of the first breath remains one of the artist's most popular paintings and a testament to the resilient cycle of life on our blue planet. Now issues as a limited edition giclee on paper, it affords new collectors an opportunity to include a signature Wyland image in their personal art collection.
