The first film for Disneynature, EARTH, tells the remarkable story of three animal families and their amazing journeys across the planet we call home. For the world premiere of this new Disney-branded label in 60 years, Disney called on Wyland to create a monumental original work of art for the world premiere at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, California. The image entitled, “Earth, The Blue Planet,” depicts a mother humpback whale and calf against a symbolic background of the universe. Wyland describes the original 4 foot x 7 foot painting as representing “the delicate and fragile balance that supports the cycle of life on Earth.” In celebration of the new film, the image was recreated as a 4,000 square-foot-painting signed by Wyland before thousands of onlookers for the Earth Day, April 22, premiere of the film, and issued as a commemorative limited edition giclee on canvas, signed by Wyland and numbered. Also, as part of the film, a 100 foot long mural featuring the Wyland artwork was incorporated into the design of the interior of the theater, allowing filmgoers an opportunity for the first time ever to walk through a Wyland work of art, prior to seeing the film. Narrated by James Earle Jones, the film EARTH combines rare action, unimaginable scale and impossible locations by capturing the most intimate moments of our planet’s wildest and must elusive creatures. For Wyland, the opportunity to create a signature work of art inspired by the film represents “the greatest combination of the pure passion of fine art and the world’s greatest subject matter.”
