Care of Wyland Original Oils

Simple ways to keep your oil painting in top shape:

Oil paintings traditionally take 1 year to completely dry.  When I finish an original oil painting, I generally allow it to dry for two weeks and then spray a Damar Retouch Varnish clear coat to protect the painting for the first year or two. As the oil dries it will begin to darken in some areas and this is a normal process.  Of course it looks terrible but after a year you can go to an art supply store in your area and order Damar Final Varnish Gloss.  Follow the instructions on the spray can.

Simple Steps:

  1. Make sure you carefully take the painting out of the frame
  2. Make sure there is no dust or dirt on the painting
  3. I like to use a clean white t-shirt and gently wipe it down ( do not use any chemicals or other cleaners)
  4. Follow instructions on Damar Spray Varnish
  5. Starting at the top of the painting from about 18 inches away after shaking the can vigorously; spray an even clear protective coat from the top to the bottom evenly (If you can’t do this call a frame shop or Fine Art Restorer and have it done professionally)
  6. Allow the painting to dry
  7. Replace back in the frame
  8. Enjoy the painting!
  9. You may have to repeat this every 3 – 5 years.
