Sperm Whale

While filming his one hour documentary for Discovery Channel, “Wyland: A Brush with Giants” Wyland found himself in the Sea of Cortez, floating in the vast sea, amid a huge group of nearly seventy sperm whales. The artist’s memories of that encounter forms the inspiration for this beautiful bronze sculpture. “Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales,” Wyland says. “They are large, powerful and can be found almost anywhere in the open ocean. In fact, it was the whale’s great size and strength that allowed it to defend itself early on against whalers. But without conservation and the end of commercial whaling it would have been only a matter of time before even these great animals would have gone on to extinction.”
