The image of a lonely coyote howling in the distance has been the hallmark of literature and western art. In this piece, Wyland uses his trained sculptor’s eye to bring a new level of nobility to these smaller relatives of the gray wolf. “Coyotes are survivors,” Wyland says. “They have keen smell, vision, and hearing and are supremely adapted not only for life in the wild, but in many cases urban areas due to human occupation of their former habitat. They are often controversial, but if you take a step back you have to appreciate their ability to survive in some of the harshest circumstances.”
